Going Fishing? Carter’s Tips
I like lure fishing. When I have a choice I use artificial lures. But I also like catching, and sometimes you just have to “match the hatch,” as they say in fly fishing.
In the mullet run show, I was able to use lures to pick off a few fish—sharks, jacks and kingfish—around the schools of mullet, but the tarpon were so focused on the live mullet that, for a day and a half, I only got one lure bite. There were just too many mullet!
When we switched to live bait it was a game changer. We got a bite immediately. Those tarpon were able to pick out the bait that was struggling on our hook, even among all the other mullet. That’s how we got our bites.
The last afternoon fishing with Christian was outstanding, live bait or not.
